1. How do the sunless tanning products work?
The only FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved active ingredient in all modern sunless tanning products is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). A colorless sugar, DHA interacts with the proteins and amino acids in the outer layer of your skin to produce a golden brown color. This is called the “Maillard Reaction”. The color this reaction produces on people will differ depending on a number of different factors such as the pH of the skin and the prevalence of certain amino acids that produce different color melanoidins.(The colors produced on the skin by the interaction of different amino acids with DHA)
Yes, there is a chemistry lesson here. To be an effective spray on tanning technician you have to understand how and why these things work so you can properly direct your client and speak intelligently about the subject to others, especially knowledgeable professionals such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons. These professionals are an excellent source of referrals to your business. Ignorance will not encourage referrals. This is why the two-day training and certification course included with every professional system purchase is so important. Sunless tanning products also contain bronzers that come in all different forms and colors. They may be blends of F, D, &C, (food, drug and cosmetic) water soluble dyes, iron oxides, (the different colors of rust formed by the oxidation of ferrous metals), or natural sources such as carmine, a pigment made from carminic acid, found in cochineal insects such as beetles. Bronzers determine the initial color of the tan right after application. This is where most products miss the mark. If you don't like the color of your skin after you have applied the product it is because the bronzer has poor coloration. The initial color will only last until you take your first shower however, it is your client’s first impression. If they don’t like it and it looks unnatural it will affect your business. The color that remains after the bronzer is washed off is produced by the DHA reaction.
